The General Cemetery, established in 1821 introduces us to the history and development of our nation, so the sites chosen in our tour shelter outstanding personalities of our republican life, where the architecture is also an important factor. The mixing of styles and symbols in every mausoleum help us to understand the meaning of the eternal rest.

Currently, the first cemetery of Santiago has an extension of 86 hectares, where more than three millions people rest in peace, men and women with their greatness and insignificant built our homeland, piece by piece. All our presidents have been buried in this cemetery, with the exception of Gabriel González Videla, who is based in his hometown of La Serena and the remains of Bernardo O `Higgins, founder of this important legacy was also held in this graveyard until he was transfered to the Main Altar, infront of the Government Palace.

There are also issues that reveal chaotic time in our history, where the understanding was overcome by force and extreme violence, a reflection of this is imposing Memorial for the missing and political prisoners. More than three thousand names carved into the marble wall account of what happened from September 11th 1973, when the Chilean Armed Forces took over the country. A period that lasted 17 year.

During our tour, we will not only be amazed by the impressive marvel mausoleoms, the ancient tombs that have survived through time along with the ostentatious modern buildings, the simpler graves embellished by colorful flowers, the modest niches that impress with their poetic epitaphs. The lush vegetation in every corner, the colorful balloons, reminding us the children who left prematurely, the flags of the football teams and political parties tell us that this place is full of life, the laughs and tear of all the people that visit and adorn with florwers the graves of their loved confirms it.
